Musical Masterclass: Advanced Genre & Form
Gilbert & Sullivan can teach us how to do fast paced characters with style. Rogers & Hammerstein illuminate the emotional passion within any lyric or song, and the complex elegance of Sondheim will open up your understanding of a moving group number in a whole new way. This class will use the rich history of Broadway as a springboard for developing musical improv that is wholly inspired by each moment, deeply emotional, and eye-opening in its execution of staging and form. Students will develop a show at the end of the series, and leave with a much more confident understanding of theatrical stagecraft and history. This class will challenge musical improvisers to discover their own creative viewpoints on stage and inspire them to own it whole-heartedly in musical improv troupes and shows, regardless of form. Must have basic musical improv training/experience (taken levels or done a musical improv production) with intermediate improv training or intermediate improv training with musical THEATER experience (musical theater production or vocal training). (8 meetings. Class size limit = 12)
Saturdays 3:30-6:30 / August 5–Sept 30 (no class Sept 2) / Graduation show October 1 / with Sarah Marie Curry & Ryan Fechter
