Beginning Musical Improv Classes
Musical Improv 101: Improvised Songs
Learn the basics of improvised songs, including musical song structure and communicating with your accompanist. You don’t need to be a great singer to succeed in this class; you just need to love singing!

Musical Improv 201: Improvised Musical Numbers
Prerequisite: Must have taken Musical Improv 101, or comparable musical improv experience elsewhere. Make up your own songs with a live musical improviser every week. We will cover basics such as rhyming, song structure, song styles, song presentation, lyrics, duets, short form singing games, and communicating with the musical improviser. We’ll also go further into fun long-form musical theater stuff–singing, dancing, scenes, and story. We’ll even get to re-improvise your favorite song or musical number.

Musical Improv 301: Full-Length Improvised Musicals
Prerequisite: Must have taken Musical Improv 101-201, or one year of comparable musical improv experience elsewhere as a student or performer. Get a chance to make up a full Broadway musical with a live pianist every week! After reviewing the basics of improvised songs such as rhyming, song structure, song styles, lyrics, duets, and communicating with the musical improviser, we’ll start learning all about musical theater. We’ll explore group numbers, romantic duets, dances and formations, singing through character, narrative arcs, reprises, and more. (6 meetings. Class size limit = 14)

Advanced Musical Improv Classes
Improvised Singing 401: Advanced Genre & Form Part One (The Dawn of Musical Theatre to The Golden Age)
Prerequisite: Must have taken Musical Improv 101-301, or one year of comparable musical improv experience elsewhere as a student or performer. Part one of a masterclass series developed by Sarah Marie Curry. This class will use the rich history of American musical theater as a springboard for developing musical improv that is wholly inspired. Gilbert & Sullivan can teach us how to do fast-paced characters with style. Rogers & Hammerstein illuminates the emotional passion within any lyric or song. Students will leave with a much more confident understanding of theatrical stagecraft and history and increase their skills and range in musical improv.
Must have basic musical improv training/experience (taken levels or done a musical improv production) with intermediate improv training or intermediate improv training with musical THEATER experience (musical theater production or vocal training).

Improvised Singing 501: Advanced Genre & Form Part Two (Sondheim to Modern Musical Theatre)
Prerequisite: Must have taken Musical Improv 101-401, or comparable musical improv experience elsewhere as a student or performer. Part two of a masterclass series developed by Sarah Marie Curry. Students will complete their musical theatre knowledge with a look at the complexity and character of Sondheim, through to the mastery and form-defying new musicals appearing on Broadway today. This class will challenge the advanced musical improviser to discover their own creative viewpoints on stage and will culminate in a showcase that encompasses the entire knowledge-based learned in the masterclass series.
Must have basic musical improv training/experience (taken levels or done a musical improv production) with intermediate improv training or intermediate improv training with musical THEATER experience (musical theater production or vocal training). (8 meetings. Class size limit = 12)
Singing Improv 601: Advanced Narrative Structure
Prerequisite: Must have taken Musical Improv 101-501, or comparable musical improv experience elsewhere as a student or performer. This class will challenge musical improvisers to discover and develop their own full-length improvised musical. Students will get a healthy workout in narrative improvisation forms as well as an education in troupe creation and the behind-the-scenes production aspects of collaborative art. Must have completed levels 401 and 501 to participate. (6 meetings. Class size limit = 12)
